Gents and Bunnies take note: American Playboy, a new Amazon studios docuseries featuring ten episodes, is about to bare-all on the sex-fuelled life of the original Playboy himself, Hugh Hefner. Full title American Playboy: The Hugh Hefner Story, the series will combine theatrical re-enactments of Hefner’s unique lifestyle with the inclusion of interviews and rare footage from his personal archive. With over 17,000 hours of footage and some 2,600 scrapbooks referenced during production to showcase the empire that changed the global culture of sex and sexuality.
Celebrities such as Gene Simmons and Jesse Jackson also give their personal insights to reveal new narratives that promise to give viewers an unprecedented look into the enormous rise of Hefner’s popular Playboy magazine. All episodes will be live for viewing on Amazon Prime on April 7, and for those without a paid subscription, the pilot episode will be available between April 7-13.
The docuseries is being released in a time where Playboy is struggling to remain relevant in modern society. Last year they announced they would stop publishing pictures of nudity, but reversed the decision earlier this year.
