A large-scale KAWS:HOLIDAY sculpture will be sailing through Seoul’s Seokchon Lake from July 19 to August 19. KAWS teamed up with AllRightsReserved to bring the project to life.
Brian Donnelly, the artist known as KAWS, is an American artist and designer who started his career as a graffiti artist. From there, he started into subvertising, which is the practice of making spoofs or parodies of other advertisements. All of that work led KAWS to creating a cast of figurative characters and motifs. At first, KAWS kept his characters in the 2D world, but eventually branched out into 3D. He now makes sculptures, acrylic paintings on canvas, and screen prints. He has also partnered with companies to release limited edition toys, clothing, skate decks, and other products.
The KAWS:HOLIDAY sculpture comes after Donnelly’s popular Sesame Street and Dior collaborations. The inflatable companion measures 28 meters, and comes with a capsule of memorabilia, including a scaled-down replica of the giant companion, a floating bed, an umbrella, three T-shirts, and a towel. The items can be purchased in the Ding Dong Takuhaibin online store. Initial stock has sold out, but restocks are said to be coming soon. After its time in Seokchon Lake, the KAWS:HOLIDAY installation will begin a world tour.
