Renaissance Superheroes Are a Bit out of Time

An “anachronism” is “an error in chronology, especially a chronological misplacing of persons, events, objects, or customs in regard to each other.” Flemish artist Vlaamse Helden has created a series of portraits that would be considered anachronistic—at least in the comic book world.

Working off of questions like, “What if Superman was born in the sixteen century? And what if the Hulk was a duke? How would Van Eyck have painted Snow White?” Helden has put together a gallery of 51 portraits of your favorite comic book superheroes and villains all reimagined as characters of the Renaissance. From Spiderman to Batman, Wolverine to Superman, and more, including Catwoman, Wonderwoman, Captain America, Iron Man, and the Joker, Helden gives us an idea of what these heroes might have looked like 400 years ago.

Helden also included characters from popular fairy tales, like Snow White, and other fantasies, like Alice in Wonderland. There’s also a healthy dose of Star Wars characters. An appreciated nod to actors who have portrayed some of favorite characters was done in the gallery, with Christopher Reeves as the Renaissance Superman and Heath Ledger as the Joker.

This gallery may be anachronistic, but you have to appreciate the hard work and incredible imagination that went into creating it.
