The Meme Dream
It’s not the first time we’ve seen Aussies reaching for a supple of dank memes to get through lockdown. In 2020, when concerns were at their peak, Instagram, Reddit and Facebook were flooded with working from home memes, providing a brief spark of joy in an otherwise bleak outlook. This time around, it’s more of the same, but it appears the sequel may be better than the original. Harder, darker, danker, the latest crop of COVID memes and lockdown jokes are shining a light on our deepest thoughts and providing a melodramatic window into our ever-diminishing souls. But then again, that’s what we do.
Laughing in the face of adversity is an innately human trait, particularly for us Aussies. According to Ros Ben-Moshe, Adjunct lecturer School of Public Health and Psychology, La Trobe University, humour, laughter and playfulness help foster resilience and provide a coping strategy to better manage and reduce stress.
“Cultivating a laughter mindset is an important tool to build connection and gain some mastery over things we can’t control. Not all play or humour results in laughter, but it primes the mind’s internal landscape towards positivity,” she said. “Self-enhancing humour – maintaining a humorous outlook in stressful or adverse situations – is linked to positive psychological well-being signs such as happiness, satisfaction with life, and an optimistic outlook. So, if we can laugh at COVID-19 by making jokes about toilet paper or homeschooling it lessens the sting, making us feel more in control.”
In fact, Studies from the University of Granada suggests that laughter, whatever the cause, induces a range of physiological, psychological, social, spiritual, and quality-of-life benefits. These range from heart health, blood pressure in aged care settings, and pain tolerance. It has even been know to have a similar effect on the brain as meditation, anchoring our minds to a present moment of joy.
See? It’s alright to laugh about lockdown and not feel bad about the crushing weight of the world bearing down on the meaningless bag of atoms you call your body…too dark?
