Back in the early 1990s, kids were tuning in to Nickelodeon to watch a zany cartoon called “Rocko’s Modern Life.” The show ran from 1993 to 1996 and was created by Joe Murray and Mr. Lawrence. Rocko is making a comeback with a special animated series called “Rocko’s Modern Life Static Cling.” The show will be available through Netflix on Friday, August 9.
The new show has Rocko returning to O-Town after spending the last two decades stuck in outer space. When the crew finally returns to Earth, they find that things have changed considerably. Heffer and Filburt, Rocko’s cohorts in adventure, adapt easily, quickly becoming obsessed with modern technology like touch-screen O-phones, endless food trucks, and radioactive energy drinks.
Rocko, on the other hand, has a more difficult time adjusting, especially when he finds that his job at Kind-of-a-Lot-O-Comics has been replaced with an instant-print kiosk. To make things even worse, Rocko’s favourite show, “The Fatheads,” has been cancelled. Rocko sets out to get the show back on the air by finding the show’s creator Ralph Bighead.
Murray and Lawrence return for the special and are joined by writer Martin Olson. Also returning are the show’s primary voice actors Carlos Alazraqui, who plays Rocko; Tom Kenny, the voice of Heifer; and Charlie Adler, who plays Mr. and Mrs. Bighead. Mr. Lawrence takes up Filburt’s voice again. Jill Talley, Linda Wallem, Steve Little, Cosmo Segurson, and Dan Becker are also lending their voice talents to the show. A trailer for the special dropped on July 26.
The show was originally slated to come out last year, but when that didn’t happen speculation led to a lot of rumours regarding the special. When Netflix announced that it had acquired the rights to Rocko’s Modern Life, hope rekindled that fans would finally get to see their favourite show make a comeback.
