ASUS Portable Monitor Range Doubles Down on Work and Play

Ahead of Computex 2019, ASUS unveiled two full HD portable monitors perfect for gaming on the go or increasing workflow. First up is the monitor with touch functions, appropriately named ZenScreen Touch. When the device is connected to a smartphone, users can display and interact with their apps for a large screen productivity boost.

The other device falls under ASUS’ Republic of Gamers moniker and goes by ROG Strix XG17. This one doesn’t have touch functions but makes for an incredibly sleek and slim portable setup. Strix XG is the world’s first portable gaming monitor to offer a 240Hz refresh rate which is the eSports standard.

Mario Kart 8 was demoed on the monitor in split-screen racing. The game ran well and brought back those nostalgia-feels for the Mario Kart 64 days. Strix XG17 looks set to become an excellent alternative to the miniature Nintendo Switch display.

Alternatively, each of the monitors can connect to a PC or laptop for dual-screen workflow and multitasking. There’s also no reason why ZenScreen Touch can’t double as a gaming monitor.

ASUS ZenScreen Touch offers a 15.6-inch 1080p touchscreen with a 7800 mAh battery that lasts up to four hours. It weighs just 900 grams and is 9mm thin. The responsive 10-point touch screen supports swipe, scroll, drag and pinch gestures, so users get work done more efficiently. Connectivity is handled via USB and micro-HDMI.

Strix XG17 measures in at 17.3-inches and offers 3 hours of battery life. While it’s not as long as we’d like, the monitor does support fast charging. Connectivity is through micro-HDMI with USB-Type C charging. At a later date, ASUS is expected to unveil an accessory that allows the Strix monitor to attach directly on top of an existing monitor to keep vision centred straight ahead.

Both monitors come with a protective case that doubles as a kickstand and can be displayed in both landscape and portrait.

There’s currently no word on price or release date for either the ZenScreen Touch or the Strix XG17, although ASUS has thrown out a quarter three 2019 release window for most of its upcoming products range which also includes the dual screen Pro Duo ZenBook and 30th-anniversary pearl white leather laptop.
