It’s time to embrace n00b tubing one-man armies, AC130’s ABOVE! And Rust, with the remastered version of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 (MW2) available for free on the Playstation store.

In what has become a nostalgic trend for video game companies, remastered games are coming out of every studio with a popular game series attached to it. Thankfully for those with tighter wallets, the release of Call of Duty MW2 on Playstation 4 will be free for the next month.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2

It comes as part of Sony’s PS Plus membership service, which offers a few classic games for free every month. This month will see MW2 join the list, allowing new and veteran gamers the chance to save America from those pesky Russians. Quite timely, considering the plans for Call of Duty 2020 allude to a return to the Black Ops sub-series in a Cold War setting.

First announced in February this year, Activision Blizzard announced the new game would arrive sometime in Q4 2020, though refused to mention which published would leading the development.

Activision COO Coddy Johnson celebrated the franchise during the announcement, claiming it “has never been better positioned for growth”. “And there’s more to come, including entirely new experiences within the Modern Warfare universe and then of course, in Q4 this year, a new premium Call of Duty release which is already generating excitement in our playtests,” said Johnson.

With Call of Duty Warzone datamining revealing models of the U2, a Cold War-era spy plane, Infinity Ward’s Taylor Kurosaki said the battle royale mode “will be the through-line that connects all of the various sub-franchisees of Call of Duty.” With this in mind, it appears Activision Blizzard wants as many players as possible to experience what was arguably the high-point of the original Call of Duty trilogy. While it’s unclear whether or not the notorious ‘No Russian’ mission will remain in the remastering, the free release will certainly reinvigorate fans of the series.

But MW2 isn’t the only free game you can cop this month.

Fall Guys

PlayStation also revealed you can get your hands on all Guys: Ultimate Knockout, the massive multiplayer party game where up to 60 players compete through escalating rounds of chaos until one player is left standing. Players must survive a series of hilarious challenges in brutal free-for-alls or co-op where only the winning team advances to the next round. Bend, bounce and bash your way through physics-based obstacles, from smashing through doors and balancing on massive see-saws, to racing up mountains riddled with traps.

Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout is a new release, launching Tuesday, August 4 and will be available to PS Plus members from that date. We’re expecting this one to go on to similar success as previous PS Plus title Rocket League.

And remember, you’ve still got time to download July’s PS Plus games: NBA 2K20, Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration and Erica; all available until Monday, August 3.
