Following in the vein of Pokemon Go, a soon-to-be-released mobile game version of the popular Netflix show Stranger Things will take you on a journey during your daily commute and travels. The game was announced during an E3 panel, and will be a location-based puzzle RPG for iOS and Android devices. The game is being created by Finnish game studio Next Games in partnership with Netflix.
“No matter where you are at in the world,” says Chris Lee, Netflix’s director of interactive games, “you can fight and battle against The Upside Down, even in your own backyard.” Much like the show, the game will avail itself of 1980s’ culture, adopting a “retro, Saturday morning cartoon art style.”
The game closely follows the events of the show, we don’t want to give too much away but here’s a spoiler-free peak at a co-op sidequest with Mike and Dustin. pic.twitter.com/3JdLCawM2p

“We are huge fans of Stranger Things and are thrilled to work together with Netflix to bring our shared vision of Stranger things to life in a mobile game format. Our core focus will be to deliver on Stranger Things’ rich and intense themes like friendship and supernatural adventure,” explains Teemu Huuhtanen, CEO of Next Games, “and translate these into snack-sized entertainment on your mobile device.” Those “snack-sized” installments can happen during your commute or whenever or wherever you are as the game will use Google Maps to create gameplay objectives that are based on your location. Players will be able to play as one of 12 characters from the show and will also be able to team up with a friend to solve puzzles, explore the town of Hawkins, and even take on the second season villain, the Mind Flayer. Huuhtanen continues, “Combined with Netflix’s second-to-none ability to reach audiences across the globe, we will deploy all of our accumulated creative and technological expertise to create a game for the fans of the series all around the world.”
This isn’t the first game based on Stranger Things. In 2017, indie gaming company BonusXP released a game that allowed you to play as either Eleven or Max. This new game will most likely be released in conjunction with the start of the third season of Stranger Things in July.
