There’s a New ‘Lord of The Rings’ Game Coming From the SFX Team Behind Peter Jackson’s Film Trilogy

There’s a new video game set in the Middle-earth universe from J.R.R. Tolkien’s novels currently in development at Weta Workshop, the company that worked on the cinematic adaptations of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Weta has partnered with Private Division, a publishing label of Take-Two Interactive, to publish the game. Private Division confirmed the news in a recent press release and shared a few tidbits about the project and how it links to the famed movie (and now TV) franchise.

While Weta Workshop is mainly involved with special effects and prop work, the company created a gaming division in 2014, which is behind this new Lord of the Rings game. We are light on details surrounding the game’s storyline or plot, but, as per the press release, “Middle-earth Enterprises have licensed the literary works of the series, providing Wētā Workshop with the broadest creative license to interpret the underlying lore of the books.”

This will provide Weta Workshop with all the creative resources they will need while coming up with their own interpretation and help them come up with a unique, rich, and enthralling tale for the game. The company is already well acquainted with the Lord of the Rings franchise and as per Michael Worosz, chief strategy officer at Take-Two Interactive and head of Private Division, “The Lord of the Rings IP is home to so many remarkable stories, and no entity is better equipped than the team at Wētā Workshop to create a distinctive, new Middle-earth gaming experience.”

The upcoming game does not have a confirmed release date right now, but it’s expected to launch during Take-Two’s Fiscal Year 2024, provided there are no delays or pushbacks. Fans of the Lord of the Rings franchise have a lot to look forward to as there are some exciting projects slated to launch in the coming days. The upcoming Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power TV series is set to launch on Amazon in the coming months, taking fans back thousands of years before the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. The series will premiere this September 2, with the initial trailer promising this adaptation will make up for The Hobbit’s lacklustre plot points. There’s even a new game titled The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, a stealth-action game that also happens to be set before the events of the original trilogy and follows the journey of the titular character.

The game was originally slated to launch on September 1 but was later delayed for “a few months,” by Daedalic Entertainment. Now, with this newly announced project by Weta, it’s safe to say that there won’t be any scarcity of Lord of the Rings content in the near future.
