Mortal Kombat 11 was announced back at The Game Awards 2018 in early December with a brief cinematic trailer showing a fight between series veterans Scorpion and Raiden. But now we’ve been treated to our first look at actual MK11 gameplay, fatalities and more. It’s looking bloody good!
MK11 will feature 25 playable fighters at launch, including Scorpion, Sub Zero, Sonya Blade, Raiden, Baraka and Skarlet returning from previous games. Newcomer Geras joins the line-up. He possesses sand-based attacks. A fighter named Kronika also joins the roster as MK’s first ever female boss. Pre-ordering the game grants access to a 26th fighter, series villain Shao Kahn.
The reveal trailer gives a glimpse of fighters Lui Kang and Kung Lao, but at this stage, they are yet to be confirmed as playable characters. If you are one of the few who attempts to follow Mortal Kombat’s convoluted story, events in MK11 are set to follow on from MK X.
An interesting titbit is Sonya Blade is voiced by former UFC fighter and current WWE star Ronda Rousey. No word on any other famous actors or fighters voicing characters.
New gameplay features include the “fatal blow” attack which is available for players to use when their health drops, and “crushing blow” is triggered when specific criteria are met. Both appear to be gore-soaked attacks that act as cinematics during a fight. There’s also a new “perfect block” mechanic giving a player a brief opportunity after blocking an attack with perfect timing.
And of course, fatalities make a return and look better than ever. You can see a highlight reel of fatalities below.
Mortal Kombat 11 is scheduled for release on April 23, 2019, for PC, PS4, XB1 and is coming to Nintendo Switch at a later date. A beta test commences March 29 for players who pre-order.
