When two icons get together, it’s usually something special and the latest TAG Heuer Connected Super Mario Limited Edition partnership is no exception. The celebrate a new long-term collaboration between the two brands, TAG Heuer and Nintendo have come together to bring Super Mario to life, right there on your wrist. Gimmicky? Perhaps, but you can’t fault the power of nostalgia, after all, a copy of Super Mario 64 just sold for a record $2.09 million.

Technology
As an innovation, the TAG Heuer Connected smartwatch is a chronograph-style timepiece that blends traditional watchmaking silhouettes with digital-first technology. With a focus on activity and movement, the smartwatch has become a favourite among sports fans and athletes, and the introduction of Super Mario follows a similar pursuit. The new interactive watchface sees Super Mario animations adorn the 45mm dial, which becomes livelier and more animated the more the wearer is active.

Features
According to TAG Heuer, the animations are based on the gamification rewards system: Mario greets you with a welcoming salute in the morning and as the day progresses and you rack up your step count, you unlock rewards at each stage of your daily target. At 25, 50, 75 and 100 per cent, there is a different animation that plays out on the dial. These take the form of Super Mario’s famous objects: at 3 o’clock the Super Mushroom that makes Mario grow, at 6 o’clock the Pipe that allows him to travel fast and at 9 o’clock the Super Star that makes him invincible lights up, and when you reach 100 per cent of your daily step count target, Mario climbs the Goal Pole, another iconic feature of the video game.
The new TAG Heuer Connected x Super Mario Limited Edition sees a completely redesigned interface, reinterpreted with Super Mario special versions. These include:
- Timekeeping watchface – Reskinned using the retro elements from the 1985 version of Super Mario Bros. with Mario, all in pixels.
- Heuer 02 watchface – Two version created exclusively for this edition: a fun rendition using Super Mario’s iconic red and blue colours, and a more classic one with subtle touches of Super Mario’s red cap.
- Orbital watchface – Its neural network replaced by Super Mario’s iconic elements rotating in a beautiful and mesmerizing movement.

Design
Where the TAG Heuer has had the wood over its smartwatch counterparts in recent years is its design. In keeping with eh brand’s heritage of fine watchmaking, the watch follows a more traditional design style, making it one of the popular sports watches on the market. For the Super Mario Limited Edition, TAG Heuer has tweaked a few things.
The bezel graduation, push buttons and crown logo have been filled with Super Mario’ iconic red cap lacquered colour, with the bezel also copping three symbols at the three, six and nine o’clock positions. The new-look steels cases also comes with two novel interchangeable straps, with an M symbol engraved on the buckles and crown. Lastly, the screw-down case-back bears the special inscription “TAG Heuer x Super Mario Limited Edition”.
The TAG Heuer Connected x Super Mario Limited Edition is presented in an exclusively designed packaging with a travel case in Super Mario red. Limited to 2,000 watches, you can pick up this release from 15th July 2021 for AUD$3,100.
