Top Video Games and Release Dates for January 2021

If your New Year’s Resolution included something about saving money, then you really shouldn’t read our top video games list. Below, you will find details on six upcoming games, and we can almost guarantee that you’re holding out for at least one or two, and reading the list will only draw that out further.

January 2021 might not have a massive selection of games, but what it lacks in numbers it makes up for in quality, or so we’re hoping. Hitman 3 for instance; can’t wait to dive into that one. Then there’s the highly anticipated horror title The Medium and the return of a classic in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game to name drop a few.

All of this and more, along with all the release dates for the month can be found below in our top video games for January 2021 list.

1. Hitman 3

He’s been slaying for over 20 years, and Hitman 3 brings an end to Agent 47’s current World of Assassination trilogy. This latest outing allows players to experience a globetrotting adventure featuring exotic locales brimming with opportunity.

So far, we know Agent 47’s assignment begins above the clouds in Dubai and ventures to the cramped, claustrophobic streets of Chongqing. Developer IO Interactive has also revealed the English countryside as a location where players become the judge, jury and executioner for an Agatha Christie-like murder mystery.

There’s still plenty to be revealed, but we do know owners of the previous two games can import all existing content into Hitman 3, and PS4 gamers can experience the new adventure in VR.

Platforms: PC, PS4, PS5, XB1, XBX, Switch
Release date: January 20

2. The Medium

Haunted by the vision of a murder, you travel to an abandoned resort in search of difficult answers. And if that wasn’t creepy enough, as a medium, you also have access to two different worlds: the living one and the spirit world.

Using psychic abilities, players will explore the resort to uncover disturbing secrets, solve challenging puzzles and survive encounters with sinister spirits. There’s also something getting around called The Maw, which is described as a monster born of an unspeakable tragedy.

Expect a world where nothing is what it seems, and everything has another side. Quite literally. The Medium will be available as part of Xbox Game Pass from day one.

Platforms: PC, XBX
Release date: January 28

3. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game

Ten years after its original release, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game scores a second life on modern platforms. Fans of Streets of Rage, Golden Axe and Turtles in Time will find a lot to love here.

This old school-inspired beat ‘em up pits Scott, Ramona, Knives Chao and the rest of the gang against the League of Evil Exes through charmingly pixelated levels supported by an original chiptune soundtrack.

The re-release comes bundled with all the DLC. So whether you’re a fan of the Scott Pilgrim comic, movie or original release of the game, here’s an opportunity to experience a modern classic without having to whip out an Xbox 360.

4. Redout: Space Assault

Starfox fans will want to climb aboard for Redout: Space Assault. Set in the year is 2395, you play as an ace fighter pilot during the colonisation of Mars. It’s your job to maintain order by eradicating rebels and space pirates, facilitating scientists’ research while keeping them safe, and protecting personnel from the numerous external threats.

You do this from the cockpit of a lightning-fast spaceship in epic battles across futuristic landscapes and the dark recesses of space. It’s up to you to outsmart, outmaneuver, overpower and outclass the enemy to shift the tide of the war.

5. Stronghold: Warlords

You better believe that the top video games list for January includes a strategy game. Stronghold: Warlords sees players take command of Mongol hordes, imperial warriors and samurai clansmen as they lay siege to Japanese castles and fortified Chinese cities. Each warlord under your command boosts your strategic prowess with unique perks, characteristics and upgradeable abilities.

Players will besiege historical events using new gunpowder-fuelled siege weapons and classic units across 31 campaign missions, plus multiplayer, custom skirmish and free build modes.

In the 8-bit world of Cyber Shadow, synthetic lifeforms have taken over. A desperate plea for help sets you on a journey to uncover what started this perpetual ruin.

We’re talking battles with techno hordes and dozens of apocalyptic bosses, leaping past traps, and nimbly navigating Mekacity. Saving members of your clan will unlock permanent ninjitsu abilities.
