A Tell-All Magic Johnson Documentary Will Land Next Year

He might be the greatest passer of all time, but basketball legend Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson is set to score his own tell-all documentary next year. Filmmakers XTR, H.wood Media, NSV and Delirio Films say they’ve been given “unprecedented access” to the legendary Hall of Famer and five-time Los Angeles Lakers champion. It’s a huge announcement, hot on the heels of ESPN’s blockbuster docu-series The Last Dance which focused on Michael Jordan’s final season with the Chicago Bulls. The series was a standout performer, becoming ESPN’s most-watched in history, however, the career of Magic Johnson, while perhaps not as star-studded as Michael Jordan’s is arguably more interesting.

Widely regarded as the greatest point guard to ever play the game, Magic Johnson’s career has been one of intense highs, marred by very public personal battles. After coming out of college as a star recruit, Johnson won a Championship in his first season, securing the 1980 NBA Finals MVP trophy in the process. Ten seasons, five championships and three regular-season MVPs later, Johnson abruptly retired from the game after revealing he had contracted HIV. Despite not even playing that season, Johnson returned as a special guest in the NBA All-Star game in 1992, winning MVP and subsequently announcing a comeback.

As a player, Johnson is credited with bringing basketball back into the cultural fold, thanks to his highly publicised battles with Celtics legend Larry Bird. Off the court, however, Johnson has cemented himself as a more than capable businessman, generating a net worth in excess of USD$300 million.

“In these unprecedented times we need films that celebrate heroes more than ever,” said XTR CEO Bryn Mooser in a statement to Variety. “As one of the most legendary, hardworking and resilient public figures of our time, Magic Johnson’s accomplishments both on and off the court are something worth spotlighting to the world and we’re excited to tell that story and work closely with him and NSV to take viewers inside his remarkable journey.”

There is no set date on the release of the Magic Johnson documentary just yet, but with the NBA season still in turmoil, it might better to get it out sooner rather than later.
