Famous for splashing her figure and name all over the iconic area’s biggest billboards in the mid-1980s, Angelyne shot to stardom out of sheer curiosity. After a stint in a punk band failed to net her success, the eccentric singer and model released a self-titled debut album in 1982 on independent label Erika Records, however, it was how she marketed it that drew attention. Teaming up with wealthy entrepreneur Hugo Maisnik, she unveiled a monster billboard in the middle of Sunset Boulevard that simply said ‘Angelyne Rocks’. With no further information, passersby were confused and intrigued by the advertisement, and suddenly, the wheels of her iconic Pink Corvette started to turn.

For the first time, fans can finally catch a glimpse at the unique story of how Los Angeles’ most unlikely star came to be. The new limited series, which will be distributed through Stan in Australia, depicts the artist’s life and is based on a 2017 Hollywood Reporter feature by Gary Baum. According to the official synopsis, Angelyne is about “fame, identity, survival, billboards, Corvettes, lingerie, men, women, women teasing men, men obsessed with women, West Hollywood, crystals, UFOs, and most importantly of all, the self-proclaimed Rorschach test in pink, glow-in-the-dark queen of the universe, Angelyne”. With a tagline like that, it’s little wonder she got people’s attention back in the ’80s.

The new limited series stars Shameless’ Emmy Rossum as the enigmatic heroine, alongside The Hobbit‘s Martin Freeman, Homecoming’s Alex Karpovsky, Gaslit‘s Hamish Linklater and Euphoria‘s Lukas Gage. Showrunner Allison Miiller, the woman behind the smash hit 13 Reasons Why, is on board to lead the series, which promises to deliver some unexpected thrills. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Miller said the new project examined influencer culture before reality TV and social media

“Angelyne is an homage to the real Angelyne, who became a cultural icon in Los Angeles. This isn’t the true story of Angelyne. It’s not a straightforward biopic,” Miller said. “It’s a story inspired by everything Angelyne represents and so it’s a magical story, a hopeful story, a story about becoming the person you were meant to be and believing in your own inner strength to manifest your dreams. It’s a story about Los Angeles and everything the city means to people who move here and to people who dream about moving here.”
