With so many Netflix TV shows and so little time to watch them all, it’s tough going figuring out the best series to watch. The content offering on the streaming service has improved dramatically over the years, and it’s safe to say we have some of the best shows on Netflix right at our fingertips. And yet… who else finds themselves constantly Googling “what to watch on Netflix?” or furiously texting friends and family advice on a good series to watch? I was guilty of doing this at least once a week – until I got stuck into some hardcore research and found some of the platform’s top series and wrote an article about it (yes, this one). When it comes to unearthing the top shows to put on your radar, it really comes down to what you’re in the mood for. Some of us prefer a light-hearted comedy like Rick & Morty, while others will be looking to deep dive into the murderous world of Jeffrey Dahmer. The important thing is to put yourself first and think about what you really want to watch. Below, we’ve split the best series on Netflix into categories, working across new releases, action, comedy, drama and thrillers. Whatever you’re into, Netflix has you covered.
New Netflix Series
Looking at the last few months on Netflix, the streaming service has dished up some great new series to sink your teeth into. Some have absolutely shattered expectations, while others have proved to be a bit of a slow burn, but all have found their niche. Here are the best new series on Netflix Australia.
1. Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story

Bloodthirsty and horrific, Netflix’s adaptation of the real-life cannibal murderer Jeffrey Dahmer is among the most-talked-about series in television history. In the short series, former American Horror Story actor Evan Peters takes the reins as the embodiment of pure evil, transforming into Dahmer as a young man and through his trial. The new series chronicles how Dahmer was able to murder 17 innocent men between 1978 and 1991, revealing harrowing details about the victims’ rape, dismemberment and eventual cannibalization.
Co-created by AHS’ Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, the series “exposes these unconscionable crimes, centred around the underserved victims and their communities impacted by the systemic racism and institutional failures of the police that allowed one of America’s most notorious serial killers to continue his murderous spree in plain sight for over a decade,” according to the official synopsis.
“Over the course of 10 powerful episodes, Dahmer shines a spotlight on the as-yet untold stories of Dahmer’s victims, the people who tried to stop him and the systemic failures that enabled him to continue his murderous spree for over a decade,” a post from the Ryan Murphy Productions Instagram account read. “Which is why we needed two trailers to properly showcase the complex story.”
From the moment Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story premiered on Netflix, it was a hit, racking up 299.84 million hours viewed during its second week on the service. The result put it just behind Stranger Things 4 as Netflix’s second-most-watched English-language series in a week, however, not everyone was happy with the portrayal. Some victims’ families are horrified that the series has been created, sparking intense backlash online. Many have claimed the series is cruel and traumatizing the families all over again, with some revealing that they were not contacted about the show. Irrespective, the release has seen a renewed interest in the case, even seeing Dahmer’s iconic glasses go under the hammer. Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story is dominating the streaming service’s top-rated releases and will continue to do so for weeks to come.
2. The Playlist

A Netflix TV show that centres around the birth of Spotify? Sounds like a bonafide winner to us. While it has yet to drop on the streaming service, interest is already high for The Playlist, a new series that tackles the early days of the music streaming behemoth. It follows founder and CEO Daniel Elk, played by Edvin Endre (Vikings), and explores how he took a simple idea and turned it into a mind0bending business juggernaut. The series will also feature other Spotify employees, such as Petra Hannson (played by Gizem Erdogan) and Andrew Ehn (played by Joel Lützow) as well as Christian Hillborg who will take on the role of Spotify co-founder Martin Lorentzon.
While the show is a fictionalised account, The Playlist is grounded in reality. With this new series, Netflix has mirrored the same vibe as other fictionalised Big Tech films and shows like the Apple TV+ drama WeCrashed, based on WeWork and Showtime’s Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt. According to Variety, the series is inspired by Spotify Untold, a book about Spotify by two Swedish business reporters.
3. The Sandman

Based on the DC Comic of the same name, The Sandman is already proving to be one of the best new series on Netflix. It follows the story of cosmic beings Morpheus, AKA Dream, Sandman, Onerous and other names, who was captured and held prisoner for more than a century. Now, he’s journeying across different worlds and timelines to fix the chaos his absence caused.
Beyond its striking (albeit obviously soundstage-crafted) visuals, the new series has managed to capture the notoriously hard-to-explain story of the world that waits for all of us when we close our eyes and sleep. In The Sandman, this region is known as the Dreaming and is home to the series’ namesake hero, who gives shape to all of our deepest fears and fantasies. However, when Dream is captured and imprisoned for a century, a series of events are put into motion that will irrevocably change the dreaming and waking worlds. If you love fantasy drama, The Sandman will immediately grip you.

4. Devil in Ohio

Devil in Ohio is based on a young adult suspense/thriller novel that was actually inspired by true events. And if you loved Emily Deschanel in Bones, you’ll love her in Devil in Ohio as a psychiatrist who shelters mysterious cult escapee Mae. But not all is as it seems with this girl, whose strange arrival threatens to tear her family apart, while her cult will stop at nothing to get her back.
The series starts out slow, but as it goes on, The Devil in Ohio gets a little more in-depth and finds its place. While it could benefit from some more violence (which we don’t often say), it does a fairly apt job of capturing a sense of dread that inevitably lurks around every corner. When Mae, a young girl is found alone and out of sorts, she is taken to the hospital where nurses uncover a series of devil-worshipping scars across her body. Quickly, Mae’s life unravels and it is revealed that she may well have escaped a vicious cult that aimed to use her as a human sacrifice.
5. The Lincoln Lawyer

The Lincoln Lawyer is a legal drama proving to be a smash hit Netflix series, based on the 2008 novel The Brass Verdict by Michael Connelly, which is a sequel to his novel The Lincoln Lawyer. It stars Manuel Garcia-Rulfo as Mickey Haller, a defence attorney in LA who works out of a chauffeur-driven Lincoln Navigator, rather than an office, as he takes on cases across LA. A criminal defence lawyer and recovering addict, this Netflix show has countless twists and turns to keep you hooked.
While this iteration doesn’t quite have the nuanced charisma that Matthew McConaughey’s movie adaptation did, the Netflix series does a stellar job of unpacking the legal drama in short snippets. If you loved shows like Suits, this one is definitely a series to put on your list of what to watch on Netflix.
6. The Midnight Club

From the mind behind The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass, The Midnight Club delivers a series of spooks and chills in a slightly new setting. Mike Flanagan’s latest work follows eight teenagers living in a hospice home who meet each midnight in a creepy library to tell ghost stories. Playing out like an anthology series all of its own, the new show goes from drama to comedy to horror in a flash. It’s definitely something different from the modern-day master of horror, but there are some familiar elements thrown in.

7. You

Penn Badgley brilliantly brings to life the character of Joe Goldberg, bookstore manager and serial killer who has a penchant for falling in love with beautiful women, becoming extremely obsessed, and eventually killing them. There are currently three seasons of You on Netflix, and each season follows a different love interest. You season 4 is currently being filmed, so make sure you catch up before it airs early next year.
For those who have yet to watch the series, You starts out strong but has dipped off in recent years. The first season sees Joe haunting his victims and stalking them with impressive finesse, however, as we dive into season two, a lot of the charm and intrigue of the serial killer book clerk has worn off. Insert a love interest that matches Joe’s confusing and demented approach to life and suddenly the tables have turned.
8. Money Heist

Looking for the ultimate Netflix drama binge? Look no further thanMoney Heist (otherwise known as La Casa de Papel). The Netflix series traces two money heists led by the Professor (Álvaro Morte), one on the Royal Mint of Spain, and one on the Bank of Spain told from the perspective of one of the robbers, Tokyo (Úrsula Corberó). What’s cool about this show is the story is told in a real-time-like way and relies on flashbacks, time jumps, and a very unreliable narrator. When “La Casa de Papel” first debuted on the Spanish channel Antena 3, it was a modest rating hit. However, viewership began to slip as the story progressed. Behind the scenes, creatives wondered if the waning interest was due to commercial breaks or the week-long wait between episodes, so naturally, the producers turned to Netflix.
The service acquired global streaming rights and then re-cut the series into 50-minute episodes, renaming it from La Casa de Papel to Money Heist in the process. By early 2018, it was the most-watched non-English language series on Netflix, widely regarded as some of Netflix’s best work, so much so that creator Álex Pina was forced to split the final instalment in two.
“When we began to write Part 5 in the midst of the pandemic, we felt that we had to change what was expected from the ten-episode season and used every tool we could to create the sensation of a season finale or series finale in the first volume itself,” Pina said. “We decided to work in an extremely aggressive genre, putting The Gang on the ropes. In volume 2, we focus more on the emotional situation of the characters. It is a journey across their sentimental map that connects us directly to their departure.”
The show wrapped in 2021, but there are five seasons available for bingeing, so you better get on it!

9. Ozark
Best for: Drama

Ozark is a crime drama TV series on Netflix starring Jason Bateman and Laura Linney. Bateman stars as a financial advisor who drags his family from Chicago to a summer resort community in the Missouri Ozarks. With wife Wendy and their two kids in tow, Marty (Bateman) is on the run after a money-laundering scheme goes wrong, forcing him to pay off a substantial debt to a Mexican drug lord in order to keep his family safe.
While the first three seasons of Ozark were critically and publically acclaimed, it was season four where the Netflix series really took things to another level. Without giving too much away, the fourth instalment of the dramatic drug cartel show saw the Byrdes more ingrained in the Navarro drug cartel than they ever thought, but optimism is shining through. With their freedom in sight, the family slowly gains confidence, however, an old enemy appears to be sharpening his sword. Like Money Heist, the final season of Ozark was so enthralling, series lead, director, and executive producer Jason Bateman was forced to cut it in two, with the 14-episode mega season revealing all earlier this year.
“A supersized season means supersized problems for the Byrdes… I’m excited to end with a bang,” Bateman said at the time. “We’re so happy Netflix recognized the importance of giving Ozark more time to end the Byrdes’ saga right,” co-creator Chris Mundy added. “It’s been such a great adventure for all of us – both on-screen and off – so we’re thrilled to get the chance to bring it home in the most fulfilling way possible.”

10. Peaky Blinders

One of the best shows on Netflix, Peaky Blinders came to an end in 2022, but there are six incredible seasons to catch up on. Peaky Blinders is an epic centred on an Irish/Romani crime family based in Birmingham, England around in the 1920s after the end of the first World War. Written by acclaimed filmmaker Steven Knight, the entire series is directed by Anthony Byrne and follows a family of illegal bookies who fall afoul of a gun-running racket. Led by the enigmatic boss Tommy, played expertly by Oppenheimer lead Cillian Murphy, the mob family finds themselves mixed up in brewing rivalries and betrayal.
While the first season follows a communist vs enterprise storyline that threatens to tear the family apart, the following seasons see enemies piling up for Tommy Shelby from Russians to Italian mobsters. Some famous names appear on the cast list, like Tom Hardy as Alfie Solomons (our fan favourite), with a number of contentious love interests for Tommy arriving and disappearing just as quickly. The third season sees Tommy bury himself in politics, becoming the Labour MP for Birmingham South by the end of season four, however, his new position leads to inner turmoil and conflict with his family. On the surface, Peaky Blinders is a brutal look at 1920 British gangsters, but at its heart, the Netflix series is really about family. neglects his son Charlie and doesn’t seem to care that he’s got another child on the way.

12. Squid Game

Perhaps one of the best TV shows of 2021, Squid Game earned a cult following around the world for its incredibly original and innovative storyline. Set in South Korea, Squid Game sees hundreds of cash-strapped players accept a stranger’s invitation to compete in children’s games with $45.6 billion to win, but with deadly high stakes. A bit gruesome at times with some comedy thrown in for good measure, Squid Game is one of those shows that might be something you wouldn’t normally watch, but once you start, you’re instantly gripped and can’t look away. It was so popular, it’s been renewed for a second season.

13. The Witcher

While it’s been a long wait between drinks, the second season of The Witcher certainly didn’t disappoint. The former video game title was transformed into a fantasy epic led by Superman actor Henry Cavill and it immediately took the world by storm. In the series, Cavill plays Geralt of Rivia, a mutated monster hunter who struggles to find his place in a disenchanted world.
Much of the first season follows Geralt, the Crown Princess Ciri of Cintra, and the sorceress Yennefer of Vengerberg at different points in time, however, it is the bond between Geralt and Ciri that gets the most airtime. Unbeknownst to both of them, the two have been linked by destiny since before Ciri was born, with Geralt inadvertently demanding her as a reward for his services by invoking “the Law of Surprise”. After the two finally meet, Geralt becomes the princess’s protector, working to ensure her Elder Blood is not usurped and used for malicious purposes.
The second season follows a similar storyline, however, there is an added element of danger. Convinced Yennefer’s life was lost at the Battle of Sodden, Geralt looks to bring Princess Cirilla to the safest place he knows, his childhood home of Kaer Morhen. Meanwhile the Continent’s kings, elves, humans and demons strive for supremacy outside its walls, he must protect the girl from something far more dangerous: the mysterious power she possesses inside.

14. The Umbrella Academy

A runaway sci-fi series arriving from the most unexpected of places, The Umbrella Academy delivers a lot more than you may have bargained for. Penned by My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way, the American superhero series follows a family of genetic powerhouses as they struggle to find their place in an unusual world. The series kicks off in 1989, when 43 infants are inexplicably born to random, unconnected women who showed no signs of pregnancy the day before. Seven of the unique children are adopted by billionaire industrialist Sir Reginald Hargreeves, who creates the Umbrella Academy and prepares his “children” to save the world, however, in their teenage years, the family fractures and the team disbands.
Fast forward to the present time, the six surviving members of the clan reunite upon the news of Hargreeves’ passing, working together to solve the mystery surrounding their father’s death. As time wears on, their contentious and abrasive personalities again threaten to pull the estranged family apart, all while a global apocalypse looms overheard. Entirely unique and surprisingly funny, The Umbrella Academy is well worth a watch.
15. Stranger Things

Stranger Things is another Netflix series that’s earnt itself a serious cult following across the globe. Starring Millie Bobby Brown, Winona Ryder and Finn Wolfhard, the show is set in 1980s Indiana, where Eleven, a teen with powerful psychic powers (Brown) escapes a sinister government project. She eventually joins forces with a group of local boys in search of answers, which quickly leads them down a dark, dangerous and supernatural path. The show was originally called ‘Montauk’ because it is inspired by an alleged US Military programme named The Montauk Project which reportedly involved experiments on children involving mind reading, mind control and time travel.
The first few seasons of Stranger Things played out look a homage to 1980s horror and sci-fi, delivering a unique level of nostalgia and intrigue through every episode. Set to a backdrop of Dungeons & Dragons, the series blurs the line between horror, sci-fi and drama, introducing viewers to a number of iconic monsters and villains, including the Demigorgan, the Mind-Flayer and of course, Papa.
Much like Money Heist and Ozark, showrunners the Duffer brothers were forced to split the fourth instalment of the show in two, with the second part of season four resulting in just two super-sized episodes. The final season sees Eleven and her friends venture back from California to Hawkins and the Creel House in a desperate attempt to take down a new threat. Best of all, if you love Stranger Things, there’s good news. Season five of the show is set to land in the coming months (possibly years) and the Duffers have already outlined a spin-off is coming in the future.
“It’s not following… I’ve read these rumours that there’s gonna be an Eleven spinoff, that there’s gonna be a Steve and Dustin spinoff or that it’s another number,” the Duffer Brothers recently said on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. “That’s not interesting to me because we’ve done all that. We’ve spent I don’t know how many hours exploring all of that. So it’s very different.”
The Duffer Brothers made it crystal clear the spinoff will be “1000% different” from the original series. While it may not feature the same main characters fans have come to love, they did mention the upcoming spinoff will maintain the tone and “storytelling sensibilities” of the flagship.

Comedy on Netflix Australia
Who doesn’t love a good laugh? Thankfully, Netflix delivers on the humour front, dishing out some of the best comedies on any streaming platform. From the high-octane Cobra Kai to the overly meta Rick & Morty, the streaming isn’t short on a joke. Here are the best comedy series on Netflix.
17. Cobra Kai

A TV series sequel to the beloved Karate Kid franchise, Cobra Kai is set 30 years after being defeated by Daniel LaRusso at the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament. Johnny Lawrence is an unemployed handyman haunted by a wasted life. Yet after a chance encounter of rescuing a bullied kid from his tormentors, he’s inspired to restart the Cobra Kai dojo. It’s a whole lot of fun and laughter peppered with some serious heartfelt tones, making it one of the best Netflix shows.

18. Rick & Morty

One of the best-animated shows on Netflix, Rick & Morty follows the wild adventures of Rick, a brilliant yet seriously boozy scientist and his anxious teenage grandson Morty. Together, the pair explore the infinite universes with lots of mayhem, they explore the infinite universes and alternate dimensions, causing mayhem and madness at every turn.
While the first three seasons of the animated series were critically a publically admired, the fourth instalment failed to live up to the hype. Recently, co-creator Roiland described the new season as “fucking incredible” and stated that it would see many of the hollow plotlines from season five disappear into the mist.
“I will say that it’s a bit more canonical. It really rewards fans of the show that have been watching up to this point,” Roiland told IGN at San Diego Comic-Con 2022. “I think we’re kind of finally back into the rhythm of Rick And Morty, and I think season six is… I didn’t particularly think season five was bad, but season six is fucking amazing. It really is a fucking quality season.”
For fans of the show, the fifth season of the iconic animated series just dropped on Netflix, seeing Roiland and Harmon once again join forces with Chris Parnell, Spencer Grammer, Sarah Chalke, Maurice LaMarche and Kari Wahlgren. Season five wrapped up in August 2021, season six marks one of the shortest interims between seasons for Rick and Morty. In prior years, Season four debuted in November 2018 and released five episodes before the season resumed and concluded in May 2020. Season three aired in 2017, Season two in 2015 and season one in 2013-2014.
“It’s hard to overstate the impact of ‘Rick and Morty.’ More than a hit show, it is truly a global phenomenon,” Michael Ouweleen, president of Adult Swim and Cartoon Network, said in a statement accompanying the announcement. “As we prepare to launch this soon-to-be iconic season, we will be giving fans a unique way to be part of the fun – so keep your eyes peeled.”

19. The Sinner

It’s a deep dive into how and why ordinary people commit such heinous crimes, and Pullman effortlessly pulls off his role as a detective with a traumatic and difficult life who works to solve these seemingly random but vicious crimes.
20. Mindhunter
Best for: Thriller & Horror

Set in the late 1970s, Mindhunter follows two FBI agents and a psychologist who operates the FBI’s Behavioral Science Unit within the Training Division at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia. They launched a research project to interview imprisoned serial killers in the hopes of understanding the psychology behind why they did what they did, in the hopes this knowledge can solve ongoing cases.
Directed by Fight Club favourite David Fincher, the series is a masterclass of modern cinema, expertly detailing some real-life serial killers with stunning realism. Unfortunately, Netflix pull the plug on Mindhunter after season two, however, there have been a number of online petitions circulating to bring the show back, so we’ll have to wait and see if season three ever eventuates.
