We can’t seem to get enough of the misadventures of the wealthy, can we? Earlier this year, the captivating tale of Succession’s dysfunctional Roy family reached its climax, and now we must bid farewell to the beloved Billions as well. However, not without a tantalising glimpse into what lies ahead of its streaming release on August 12.
Stan has just dropped the latest trailer for the highly acclaimed drama’s seventh and final season, announcing the epic return of everyone’s favourite hedge fund titan, Bobby “Axe” Axelrod (played by Damien Lewis) as he navigates the treacherous realms of finance and politics one last time.
The teaser kicks off with the iconic horse tones of Axe, narrating some platitudes about the ideals of America, before calmly yet frightening stating, “You can’t escape your enemies”, referring perhaps to his rivalry with the likes of business opponent Mike Prince (Corey Stoll) and U.S. attorney Chuck Roades (Paul Giamatti). This sets up the apparent vengeance tour from the one and only Bobby Axelrod, who up until now, has been hiding out in Switzerland since the end of season 5.
We are then treated to a fast-paced highlight reel showcasing the prominent figures of the show. Stoll’s Prince finds himself amidst a presidential run, while Giamatti’s Rhoades tirelessly pursues him once more. Alongside them, the screen features other familiar faces, including Maggie Siff, David Costabile, Asia Kate Dillon, Condola Rashad, Jeffrey DeMunn, Sakina Jaffrey, and Daniel Breaker.
Now, you might be pondering the plausibility of Lewis’ comeback considering the happenings in the Season 5 finale, titled “No Direction Home.” We’ve explained previously but allow us to jog your memory. In that concluding episode, confronted by the authorities, Lewis’ character, Axe, swiftly escapes to Switzerland with a substantial sum of money to elude legal consequences in New York. However, it seems our corrupt cash king seems to want back in the fight.
The official synopsis reads: “In the final season, alliances are turned on their heads. Old wounds are weaponised. Loyalties are tested. Betrayal takes on epic proportions. Enemies become wary friends. And Bobby Axelrod returns, as the stakes grow from Wall Street to the world.”
Billions is created and executive produced by showrunners Brian Koppelman and David Levien (Super Pumped, Rounders). Beth Schacter (Super Pumped) also serves as showrunner and executive producer. The series was also created by Andrew Ross Sorkin.
The final season of Billions will premiere August 12, same day as the U.S., only on Stan. You can catch up on all the previous seasons now on the streaming service.
