Chris Pratt’s Lasagna-Loving Garfield Has Been Revealed
Meow-ve over, Mario, there’s a new moustachioed icon in town: Garfield. Chris Pratt, who recently voiced the Italian plumber in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, will also be lending his voice to the iconic lasagna-loving cat in a new animated film set to hit theatres in 2024. Fans got a glimpse of the upcoming feline fun when a new official image of Garfield was shared on National Cat Day.
Helmed by director Mark Dindal, celebrated for his work on ‘Chicken Little‘ and ‘The Emperor’s New Groove,’ and featuring a script penned by David Reynolds, recognized for ‘The Emperor’s New Groove‘ and ‘Finding Nemo,’ the reboot, titled The Garfield Movie, is set to be a computer-animated feature film based from the beloved Jim Davis comic strip.
Although plot details remain under wraps, Mark Dindal’s upcoming animated project is set to mark a fresh beginning for the franchise, promising to capture the spirit of the original comic strips with something to offer fans of all ages. The Garfield Movie will be produced through a collaboration between Columbia Pictures and Alcon Entertainment, marking Alcon’s inaugural venture into the world of animated cinema. DNEG Animation takes the reins for animation production, and Sony Pictures Releasing will handle distribution.

The film’s cast lineup, which is already generating considerable buzz, sees Chris Pratt, known for his role as Star-Lord in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, taking the helm as the voice of the titular character. Joining him is another MCU favourite, Samuel L. Jackson, taking on the role of Garfield’s father, Vic, a brand new character created for the film. The ensemble cast also includes Nicholas Hoult, Ving Rhames, Cecily Strong, Hannah Waddingham, Brett Goldstein, and Bowen Yang, promising an exciting lineup of talent.
This new image of Garfield gives us another look at his updated design after it was first revealed in 2022. The latest computer graphics make the iconic cat look better than ever, while still staying true to Jim Davis’ beloved comic strips.
Pratt dropped a playful hint about the film last year, sharing a lighthearted post on X where he joked about his unique “research” approach for the role. Although the release date was later pushed to May 2024, he quipped, “Get ready for some Garfield! Coming to theaters on President’s Day weekend 2024. Finally, a Monday you’re not going to hate! I have been deep in research on this one. Mostly eating lasagna. But also licking myself clean. LESSSGO.”
The 44-year-old actor certainly seems to be making a habit of voicing iconic characters with mustaches, but we’ll have to wait and see if he can do Garfield justice. Especially after hearing his voice in the Super Mario Bros. Movie, which sounded suspiciously similar to his usual tone.
The Garfield movie is slated to hit theatres on May 24, 2024.
