Twenty years after Christopher Nolan’s breakout hit, Memento, the director is back with a new thriller that bends time—Tenet. The film is the eleventh feature to Nolan’s credit, and the trailer teases a new masterpiece.
Tenet stars BlackKklansman star John David Washington, who is a former professional football player. That natural athleticism will play nicely into an action role. Not much is known as of yet regarding the plot, but the trailer does show actor Martin Donovan visiting Washington after he wakes up in the hospital. “That test you passed? Not everybody does,” says Donovan, who goes on to say, “Welcome to the afterlife.” Washington’s mission isn’t clearly defined in the trailer, but it is apparent that the stakes are high—he has to stop the outbreak of World War III. To do so, he partners up with Robert Pattinson. Michael Cain is also shown in the trailer, marking yet another feature that uses the actor. Elizabeth Debicki, Kenneth Branagh, and Himesh Patel can also be spotted in the trailer.
There’s not much to go on, other than to suggest that this movie will deal with time travel in some fashion. In one scene, Washington and Pattinson enter a room where it appears that a gunfight has happened. Pattinson questions what happened, to which Washington responds that it hasn’t happened yet right before opening a door to be surprised by an armed guard. Another scene shows a car accident happening in reverse. What is apparent is that this film will follow in the same cerebral vein as Nolan’s other movies. There are definitely clues of Inception in the trailer, while Nolan’s work with the Batman series is also apparent. “We’re jumping off from the point of view of an espionage film,” says Nolan, “but we’re going to a number of different places. We’re crossing a few different genres in a hopefully exciting and fresh way.”
