Daniel Radcliffe Gets Very ‘Weird’ in First Trailer for Weird Al Yankovic Biopic

From Harry Potter to Weird Al Yankovic, there’s no doubting Daniel Radcliffe’s range as an actor. Set to star in Roku’s upcoming biopic Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, the streaming service dropped the first official trailer featuring the actor decked out in the parody icon’s curly hair and 80s inspired moustache.

Roku’s teaser for the film was produced by Funny or Die and Tango at its 2022 NewFronts presentation on Tuesday. At this stage, all we know is that Yankovic co-wrote the movie script with Eric Appel, who is also directing. No exact release date has been confirmed, with the project to launch on Roku’s platform sometime this fall (spring in Australia).

The movie will tell the “untold true story” of Yankovic, highlighting his rise to stardom with hits like “Eat it” and “Like a Surgeon” – as well as his infamous “celebrity love affairs and famously depraved lifestyle.” From the way it’s presented in the trailer, fans can expect a scripted mockumentary style, spoofing tropes that “run rampant in self-important biopics”, per Variety.

Working alongside Radcliffe, Weird also stars Evan Rachel Wood as Madonna, Rainn Wilson as radio broadcaster Dr Demnto, and Julianne Nicholson and Toby Huss as Yankovic’s parents, Mary and Nick.

“When my last movie, UHF, came out in 1989, I made a solemn vow to my fans that I would release a major motion picture every 33 years, like clockwork,” Yankovic said when the film was announced in January. “I’m very happy to say we’re on schedule, and I am absolutely thrilled that Daniel Radcliffe will be portraying me in the film. I have no doubt whatsoever that this is the role future generations will remember him for.”

Boasting an incredible career, the five-time Grammy winner is the best-selling comedy recording artist of all time. The musician’s 2014 project “Mandatory Fun” was the first comedy album in history to debut at No.1 on Billboards Top 200 chart. Yankovic has created numerous hits throughout the years, including “White & Nerdy”, “I’m Fat”, “Another One Rides the Bus”, and “Smells Like Nirvana”.
