Golden Globes 2021

All the Surprises from the 2021 Golden Globe Awards

Award-season has officially kicked off and it’s looking very nice. At the 78th annual Golden Globes, all eyes were on the glitzy and glamourous red carpet, but as usual, one Kazakh journalist stole the show. Unbelievably, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm managed to scoop the Best Picture – Musical or Comedy award, with star Sacha Baron Cohen managing to score an acting trophy for his iconic portrayal of the titular character. The recognition confirmed that Borat’s early Oscar buzz wasn’t just a fluke, but that wasn’t the only surprise of the night.

Celebrating excellence in film and television, the 2021 Golden Globes were already delayed from January due to the COVID-19 pandemic, however, hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler managed to pull off the ultimate coast-to-coast performance. Fey was anchored in New York for the ceremony, while Poehler led the charge from Los Angeles, and while technology made things slightly easier, there was still a host of Zoom awkwardness nominees had to battle through. But beyond that, things went swimmingly.

Netflix claimed some major accolades with hit programs The Crown and The Queen’s Gambit scooping six awards between them. PopTV’s Schitt’s Creek followed up last year’s sweep with another stellar performance for its farewell season, claiming two awards, for Best Comedy Series and Best Actress in a TV comedy. On the film side, Chloé Zhao’s stunning Nomadland took home both Best Motion Picture Drama and Best Director, firming as the favourite for the upcoming Academy Awards later this year. The film stars Frances McDormand as Fern, a woman who journeys around the American West in a moving convoy of grey nomads. The gripping tale is currently the front-runner to sweep the Oscars, if and when that award ceremony kicks off.

In a touching move, actor Chadwick Boseman was posthumously awarded the Best Performance in a Motion Picture (Drama) – Actor accolade for his trail-blazing portrayal of Levee in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. The powerful performance is being lauded as the best of his career, and while it’s hard to top the influence of Black Panther, you can’t help but think this could be a fitting finale to his truly inspiring life.
