Everything we Know about HBO’s True Detective Season 3

"It's all one ghetto, man. A giant gutter in outer space"

HBO has released the first teaser for the third season of its gritty crime anthology series True Detective. Along with the suspenseful teaser, here’s everything we know about season 3.

The 8 episode season commences January 2019 on HBO. In Australia, it’s a safe bet that it will be available exclusively on Foxtel.

It stars Oscar winner Mahershala Ali as Lead Detective Wayne Hays, who investigates a macabre crime involving two missing children in the heart of the Ozarks. As seen in the teaser, the story will span three time periods. It co-stars Stephen Dorff as Arkansas State Investigator Roland West and Carmen Ejogo as school teacher Amelia Reardon, who is connected to the missing children.

Showrunner Nic Pizzolatto who helmed the first two seasons is back. It was rumoured for some time that Deadwood showrunner David Milch would take over, although now he’s only credited as co-writing Episode 4.

The new season will mark Pizzolatto’s directorial debut. Jeremy Saulnier, the director behind the excellent films Blue Ruin and Green Room will also direct.

Pizzolatto and Saulnier both executive produce along with Scott Stephens, Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, as well as Cary Joji Fukunaga, Steve Golin, Bard Dorros and Richard Brown.

After a near-perfect first season starring McConaughey and Harrelson, then a lacklustre second outing with Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn, we have high hopes for the third trip down this dark and gritty lane.
