Idris Elba Confirms Luther Movie “is Happening”
Ever since star Idris Elba publicly acknowledged that he’d be interested in a Luther film, fans of the hit UK crime show been pressuring him for more info. At the 2020 BAFTA TV Awards, Elba finally cracked. The 47-year-old actor reportedly discussed the project backstage after receiving the Special Award for contributions to TV as an actor, writer and producer. Speaking about the potential of a Luther movie, Elba told Digital Spy, “I’ve maintained I’d like to see it come to a film, and that is where I think we are heading towards…And I’m looking forward to making that happen. It is happening.”

This is first real confirmation we’ve had that Elba will be returning to the role of DCI John Luther in the crime-solving saga. “With film, the sky is the limit,” Elba said. “You can be a little bit more bold with the storylines. And a little bit more international, and a little more up the scale. But John Luther is always going to be John Luther.”
Indeed he is, and it wouldn’t be the same with Elba heading up the stellar cast. By all reports, the actor has been championing a Luther movie since before the show was completed. Going back as far as 2018, Elba noted that it “would be nice to take Luther u a scale. Make the storyline bigger, make it slightly more international.”
With the latest reports seemingly confirming big things are on the way, it looks like John Luther and Co. are getting another spin.
