Everybody’s favourite assassin will be back…again. Before John Wick 4 has even hit cinemas, studio Lionsgate has reportedly confirmed that the fifth instalment of the hit Keanu Reeves-driven action series will be going ahead. Strap yourselves in, two more blockbusters are coming.
The news comes via Deadline, which reported that the franchise was moving quickly. In an earnings call, Lionsgate CEO John Feltheimer said “We’re also busy preparing scripts for the next two instalments of our John Wick action franchise, with John Wick 4 slated to hit theatres Memorial Day weekend 2022. We hope to shoot both John Wick 4 & 5 back to back when Keanu becomes available early next year.”
Filming for the new releases is currently in the early stages. Reeves is shooting Matrix 4 for Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow in Berlin, Germany, proving that the man is not opposed to a sequel. The idea of filming two movies back to back also isn’t foreign to the actor. Reeves previously shot Matrix: Reloaded and Matrix: Revolutions (parts 2 and 3 of that franchise) back to back from March 2001 to August 2002.
At the moment, John Wick 4 is slated for May 27, which is Memorial Day weekend, historically one of the biggest film premiere dates on the calendar. It’s not really a huge surprise, either. The John Wick franchise has reinvigorated our love for near-plot-less action films. Upon the success of the first film, studios were suddenly reminded that action films don’t need love interests, Oscar-winning performances or even dialogue to appeal to their target audience. Just dead dogs and Keanu Reeves.
Another two bloodthirsty John Wick instalments? Count us in.
