Directed by rising filmmaker Nia DaCosta (Little Woods), the contemporary incarnation revisits the cult classic. Say his name three times in the mirror and the urban legend will appear, slicing and dicing his way through the housing projects of Chicago’s Cabrini-Green neighbourhood. It’s a familiar premise, but for the 2021 iteration, it hits close to home.

Set a decade after the last of the Cabrini towers were torn down, visual artist Anthony McCoy (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II; HBO’s Watchmen, Us) and his partner, gallery director Brianna Cartwright (Teyonah Parris; If Beale Street Could TalkThe Photograph), move into a luxury loft condo in Cabrini, now gentrified beyond recognition and inhabited by upwardly mobile millennials.

With Anthony’s painting career on the brink of stalling, he encounters a Cabrini-Green old-timer who exposes him to the tragically horrific nature of the true story behind Candyman. Keen to make an imprint on the Chicago art world, Anthony follows the macabre details, unknowingly inviting the terrifying urban legend back into the neighbourhood.

The new Candyman trailer gives us a little more insight into what we can expect from the new Jordan Peele horror movie. After months of setbacks, fans are finally seeing the fruits of Peele and Win Rosenfeld’s Monkeypaw Productions. Candyman is set to land in cinemas on August 27. Suffice to say, it’s looking terrifying.
