Originally under Paramount’s ownership, the franchise moved to Netflix in the winter of 2019. The story follows the adventures of Detroit cop Foley (Murphy), who moves to Beverly Hills to solve the murder of a friend. The film went on to become one of the biggest hits of 1984 and legitimised Murphy’s movie-star status. It was followed by two sequels, in 1987 and 1994.

The movie is written by Will Beall and directed by Mark Molloy, with Murphy producing alongside Jerry Bruckheimer and Chad Oman of Jerry Bruckheimer Films. While the plot is yet to be revealed, Murphy gave fans some insight into just how long the project has been in the works.

During an interview with Desus & Mero in March 2021, the 61-year-old said: “They’ve been trying to make another Beverly Hills Cop for 15 years now. Right now, Netflix has it, and they’re trying to develop a script. That’s what we’re supposed to be doing next. But I’m not doing nothing until the script is right.”

Gordon-Levitt has been staying busy of late, starring in multiple flicks, including Netflix’s actioner Project Power and the Oscar-nominated The Trial of the Chicago 7. He also recently played Uber founder Travis Klanick in the Showtime series Super Pumped. From there, he will voice Jiminy Cricket in Disney’s Pinocchio and recently wrapped up production on the drama Providence opposite Lily James.

As for Paige, she’s been a star in demand following her breakout role in the A24 flick Zola. The actress most recently featured in Lena Dunham’s Sharp Stick and has several films in post, including The Toxic Avenger reboot with Peter Dinklage.
