The Hollywood Reporter revealed over the weekend that Apple Original Films landed the rights to the book, set to hit shelves in April 2023. Scorsese will direct Wager, with Dicaprio attached to star. Dan Friedkin and Bradley Thomas of Imperative Entertainment will produce the movie alongside Scorsese via Sikelia Productions, Dicaprio and partner Jennifer of Appian Way Productions. Richard Plepler will executive produce through his banner, Eden Productions.
Set in the 1740s, The Wager follows the story of 30 surviving crew members of a British ship who wash up on the shores of Brazil when their boat crashes. As they battle the harsh conditions, another ship lands on the coast of Chile six months later and accuses the former crew of mutiny.
The British Admiralty launches a special trial to uncover the truth of what exactly happened on the island, “exposing a story of not just a captain and crew struggling to survive one of the most extreme climates on the planet, but also battling their own human natures.”
DiCaprio and Scorsese have built a cinematic dynasty over the past 25 years, generating multiple awards and Oscar wins. The list includes Gangs of New York, The Aviator, The Departed, Shutter Island and The Wolf of Wall Street. Adding to the highlight reel, the pair has recently finished shooting Flower Moon, a 1920s murder mystery that will be released sometime in 2023.
David Grann’s writing is no stranger to the theatres, with adaptations of his work including The Lost City of Z, produced by Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment, and the 2018 Robert Redford drama The Old Man & the Gun.
