Judging by how things currently are at camp Marvel, it appears as if Oscar Isaac’s stint as Moon Knight might not be over just yet, as the actor and the show’s director Mohamed Diab recently jokingly teased that the second season is well on its way. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is expanding and is gradually shifting its focus from dropping big-screen releases and betting big on bringing streamable shows on Disney+. Several heroes and villains have received their own shows on the streaming service, including Moon Knight, which saw Oscar Isaac in the boots of Marc Spector, a man with multiple personalities inside his head who also happens to be the Egyptian god Khonshu’s avatar.
The first season of Moon Knight concluded with Marc and Steven finally liberating themselves from Khonshu’s clutches and beating the cunning Arthur Harrow. While the first season heavily revolved around the personalities/lives of Marc Spector and Steven Grant, the post-credits gave us our very first look at Jake Lockley as the secret third identity, who is still working for Khonshu.
Post-credit scenes are not a new concept, especially in the MCU, and usually, these brief post-credits act as groundwork, setting up future affairs. The jaw-dropping cliffhanger of Moon Knight season 1 led many to believe that the series would be back for season 2, but up until now, Marvel Studios has been very tight-lipped about the whole affair.
However, a recent video seems to indicate that the show might be returning for Season 2. A user going by the name hayaattiaaa uploaded a video on TikTok that saw Moon Knight director Mohamed Diab and protagonist Oscar Isaac in Cairo, subtly hinting that season 2 might be brewing. When asked if they were in town to film the second season, Isaac coyly replied Why else would we be in Cairo?” Even director Mohamed Diab couldn’t stop himself from sharing the TikTok video on Twitter and simply stated: “Moon Knight Season 2?”
While the news does seem to suggest the second iteration is well underway, no official statement has been made. At this point, it’s unclear whether Isaac and Diab are confirming that the filming of season 2 is underway or if they are trying to sway Marvel and Disney for a season renewal. Originally, it was planned that Oscar Isaac would portray Moon Knight for a single season containing six episodes on Disney+, and he would later reprise his role in other MCU projects.
The newly surfaced video raises more questions than it answers and it will be interesting to see what the fate of Moon Knight and Isaac will be in the MCU going forward. Marvel greenlighting Moon Knight season 2 actually seems to be a no-brainer, since the first season made it very clear that Khonshu and Jake Lockley still have a lot of unfinished business to settle. That said, we don’t expect the new season to release before late 2024 or 2025 at the earliest.
