For over seventy years, James Bond has been the one and only 007. That is, until now.
Early next year, the release of Bond 25 will mark Daniel Craig’s fifth and final venture as jaded British spy James Bond. With Craig’s finish line in sight, the internet has been awash with rumors about who will be picking up the Walther PPK in future installments of the illustrious franchise. Speculation has strayed from Idris Elba to Cillian Murphy, but recent news has pointed in a completely different direction.
Recent reports from sources inside the production have claimed that British Actress Lashana Lynch has been cast as 007 – adopting the notorious codename after Bond’s character leaves MI6.
“There is a pivotal scene at the start of the film where M says, “Come in 007”, and in walks Lashana who is black, beautiful and a woman,” said an insider on the production. “It’s a popcorn-dropping moment. Bond is still Bond but he’s been replaced as 007.”
What this means for who will play titular character will be in the future? We don’t know. But, it does throw a spanner in things and will no doubt shake up debate on forums across the internet.
Production on the Bond 25 has been plagued with mishaps. From the initial director walking out, to endless rewrites and a production halting injury to Craig in Jamaica – people are starting to think that the movie is cursed. But throughout the drama, we’ve been privy to a series of tantalizing behind-the-scenes photos and clips that look like Bond 25 should will be as badass as ever.
The announcement of Lashana Lynch as Bond’s successor is an important milestone within the franchise. The move reflects a conscious decision to move further away from the one-dimensional, exhausted character that was typified throughout Pierce Brosnan’s time in the role.
