Ending nearly two-decades ago (yes the time has flown by) the series is still considered one of the greatest of all time. Up there with the likes of Seinfeld and Everybody Loves Raymond, the hit TV show Friends managed to capture the attention of not just the American living room, but pretty much the entire world. Kicking off in 1994, all ten seasons would go on to rank within the top ten of the final television season ratings, reaching the number one spot for its eighth season. Its series finale which aired in 2004, was viewed by 52.5 million American viewers, making it the fifth most-watched finale in TV history.
For those with a current Stan subscription, your Friends watching days are coming to a close with the series switching to the red team. With Stan still trailing far behind Netflix and Foxtel, one Twitter user suggested the loss of Friends is “one more reason to chuck Stan”. While another accused Netflix of running out of ideas for content and is “recycling old shit”.
Something that is far from the truth as Netflix gears up to launch a whole swath of Original content in September including, The Devil All The Time with Tom Holland and Robert Pattinson, as well as Ratched starring Sarah Paulson as the iconic villain.
With the platform adding more viewers during lockdown (+1,078,000 viewers) than they gained over the previous twelve months, Netflix is still by far the nation’s most-watched subscription television service, with 13.28 million viewers. With ten seasons of Friends arriving soon, who knows how much larger that number will grow.
