Netflix’s Stats On The Shows Australians Binge The Most

Most of you are probably too young to remember the days before Netflix, but let me assure you, it was terrible. You had to watch TV shows one bit at a time, once per week, like a caveman, and if you wanted to watch a movie more than once you had to use a thing called a “tape”, which was basically a brick with wheels inside. So “bingeing” just wasn’t an option, unless you wanted to spend months recording every episode of a series with extreme vigilance to edit out the ad breaks. And the fact that I did want to do that, and I did it frequently, doesn’t mean it was convenient.

Today it’s not only easy to binge on your favourite shows, but thanks to Netflix’s commitment to transparency, you can find out exactly what shows are being binged the most, who’s doing the bingeing, and probably what they’re wearing while they watch for all I know. The stats for 2018 make fascinating reading. Among the highlights:

The most rewatched movies on Netflix include romcoms The Kissing Booth and To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before. This means that either these movies are so good people just want to experience the joy of watching them over and over again, or that they have such baffling plots that people have to rewatch them multiple times to figure out what’s happening.

The most binged Netflix show, both globally and in Australia, was coming-of-age drama On My Block, proving that even in the age of Netflix, age, and the coming thereof, remains a hit. Interestingly, around the world, the second series of Making A Murderer was in the top 10, but in Australia it didn’t make the cut, suggesting that Aussies aren’t as into DIY shows as other nations.

On the other hand, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina was popular here and overseas, showing that everyone loves witches, and/or that everyone loves to feel nostalgic and scared at the same time.
