Netflix and LeBron James Announce Release Date for ‘The Redeem Team’ Documentary

LeBron James’ media company Uninterrupted and Netflix recently announced The Redeem Team, a documentary focused on the 2008 USA Olympic men’s basketball road to victory in Beijing. While the streaming platform’s upcoming project may not captivate the masses as The Last Dance did in 2020, this is a story hoop fans won’t want to miss.

The Beijing Games was a pivotal moment in USA basketball history. Four years earlier, an NBA rookie LeBron James joined the likes of Allen Iverson, Dwayne Wade and Tim Duncan to compete for gold in Athens. However, they would suffer a crushing defeat in the semifinals to a Manu Ginobli-led Argentina side – marking just the fourth time Team USA hadn’t won the tournament since 1936. Heading to the Chinese capital in 2008, James teamed up with Wade Carmelo Anthony, Kobe Bryant and Chris Paul, among others, to avenge the shock loss. And avenge they did, winning all eight games, including a semifinal rematch with Argentina –a victory that would earn them the name Redeem Team.

Working with the International Olympic Committee, Netflix says they will deliver never before seen footage of the squad. Furthermore, it promises to highlight how players were selected for the team and will feature interviews with those involved, including LeBron, Dwayne Wade, and Mike’ Coach K’ Krzyzewski.

“In 2008, I played with heroes of mine, all stars, friends and future teammates. Outside of winning and showing the world that we were still the most dominant, our other big challenge was changing the perception of what everyone thought about the NBA and USA Basketball!” said Wade upon the announcement of the documentary. “I’m excited for everyone to get an opportunity to go behind the scenes and see all the work that went into this iconic team — The Redeem Team!”

Taking on the directing role is notable filmmaker and The Last Dance co-producer John Weinbach. Behind the scenes, LeBron, Wade, Maverick Carter, Jamal Henderson, and Phillip Byron of Uninterrupted will serve as executive producers. The ‘Redeem Team’ documentary is scheduled to drop on Netflix on October 7.
