The untitled film has secured the services of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever co-writer Joe Robert Cole and director Allen Hughes, who previously directed movies including Menace II Society and Dead Presidents alongside his brother, Albert. The film marks the first project under Snoop’s newly formed Death Row Pictures, with the musician set to produce alongside Sara Ramaker and Hughes.
“I waited a long time to put this project together because I wanted to choose the right director, the perfect writer, and the greatest movie company I could partner with that could understand the legacy that I’m trying to portray on screen, and the memory I’m trying to leave behind,” said Snoop in a statement. “It was the perfect marriage. It was holy matrimony, not holy macaroni.”
Backing the venture is Universal Filmed Entertainment Group chairman Donna Langley, who’s achieved incredible past success with big-screen content in the hip-hop arena. His team was behind the 2015 biographical hit Straight Outta Compton, which centred on the rise and fall of rap group N.W.A. The movie was critically and commercially successful, grossing more than USD$200 million at the global box office and earning an Oscar nomination for best screenplay.
“Snoop Dogg’s life and legacy makes him one of the most exciting and influential icons in popular culture,” stated Langley. “We met with Snoop shortly after he acquired Death Row Records and had the opportunity to hear his story in his own words. We are humbled to be able to create the lasting document of this singular artist.”
Snoop Dogg’s rap career took off in 1992 when he featured on Dr Dre’s debut single, Deep Cover, and later with his own albums: Doggystyle and The Doggfather. Since then, the 51-year-old has sold over 35 million albums globally and transcended hip-hop to become one of the most prominent recording artists in the world. He’s also found success outside the booth, both as an actor in Hollywood and entrepreneur in various business sectors.
