As Pride Month celebrations sweep the US, a host of influential LGBTQ+ community members are taking centre stage, but a new addition to the festivities is making headlines. Children’s entertainment network Nickelodeon has suggested that much-loved cartoon character SpongeBob SquarePants is gay.

Nickelodeon took to Twitter yesterday to share that the popular character was a member of the LGBTQ+ community. “Celebrating with the LGBTQ+ community and their allies this month and every month,” the network captioned an image of SpongeBob, along with Schwoz Schwartz from Henry Danger and Korra from Avatar: The Legend of Korra.

The announcement is a big move from the entertainment icon. While fans had known for some time that Korra was bisexual and that Schwoz actor, Michael D. Cohen was transgender in real-life, the SpongeBob announcement came out of the blue. It’s shocked some Twitter fans online, however, many are suggesting the pro-LGBTQ+ message was clear from the beginning.

It bears reminding that while reports suggest SpongeBob is gay, the announcement doesn’t necessarily confirm anything. The original Nickelodeon post merely confirms SpongeBob is a member of the LGBTQ+ community, without putting a label on his sexuality. Irrespective, the strong showing of support from a major entertainment network is a unifying moment of solidarity between big business and the LGBTQ+ community.
