While discussing the film on The Hot Mic Podcast, Sneider reveals that Sweeney will be playing the Julia Carpenter version of the character, the second person to take on the mantle after Jessica Drew. For those not in the know, Julia Carpenter also becomes the new Madame Web in Marvel lore after the death of Cassandra Webb. So, it would make sense for the character to debut in the film and establish a connection between the two characters.
When asked about her involvement in the film, Johnson expressed her excitement to be part of the Marvel universe, especially with a less well-known character. “There’s a lot of space to make her very cool,” she told Entertainment Tonight. “It’s always been a dream of mine to do some kind of massive action movie. I always wanted to be like a female Indiana Jones.” Hey, we can’t blame her. Who wouldn’t want to be a badass adventurer like Indy?
Of course, none of this has been officially confirmed by Sony, but that hasn’t stopped the rumour mill from churning out more exciting tidbits. It’s been reported that Dakota Johnson will star as the titular clairvoyant Madame Web, and there has been chatter about roles for other actors. Adam Scott and Emma Roberts are said to be playing younger versions of Ben and May Parker, respectively, while Isabela Merced and Celeste O’Connor are alleged to be playing Anya Corazon and Mattie Franklin.
S.J. Clarkson is at the helm of directing the film, with a screenplay crafted by Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama. Although information about the plot has been scarce, the cast members have been dropping hints that this project is truly unique, and they’re excited for fans to experience it. Let’s face it; we’ve been eagerly anticipating another Marvel movie to captivate us, especially after the triumph of the Venom films and the letdown of Morbius.
Scheduled to hit theatres in February 2024, Madame Web has recently wrapped up production in January. Watch Sneider’s podcast with all the details below.
