‘The Gray Man’: Netflix’s Next Blockbuster Franchise

Netflix has released the first official trailer for the action film, The Gray Man, ahead of its official July 22, 2022 streaming release date. In between a montage of insane stunts, fans were given a taste of the epic battle between Hollywood heavyweights Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans – and we are here for it. Boasting a historically large budget, Avengers: Endgame directors Anthony and Joe Russo seem to have taken the company credit card and put it to good use.

Based on Mark Greaney’s 2009 novel, The Gray Man pivots around a former global assassin and CIA operative Court Gentry (Gosling). However, the tables have turned, and Gentry is now the target, hunted across the globe by Lloyd Hansen (Chris Evans), a former cohort at the CIA, who will stop at nothing to kill him.

Working alongside Gosling and Evans is No Time to Die Bond girl Ana de Armas, Jessica Henwick, Wagner Moura, Alfre Woodard, Regé-Jean Page, Billy Bob Thornton, Julia Butters, Dhanush, Scott Haze, Calla Mulvey, Eme Ikwuakor, Michael Gandolfini, Sam Lerner, Robert Kazinsky, and DeObia Oparei.

At the helm are Avengers: Endgame filmmakers Joe and Anthony Russo from a script written by the former with some help from Marvel Cinematic Universe writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely.

For fans of the Russo brothers, The Gray Man marks an exciting new premise, namely due to its ridiculous budget. When production was announced in July 2020, Netflix confirmed that the Ryan Gosling-led flick was its “most expensive film to date”.

With a reported budget of around USD$200 million, the action blockbuster isn’t backwards coming forwards, and both the Russo brothers and Netflix haven’t been shy in stating the film will spawn the beginnings of something much more significant. Both parties are reportedly eyeing a full-scale franchise on a ‘James Bond-level’. As a bunch of movie buffs, we certainly hope so.

The Gray Man releases in theatres on July 15 and will hit the streaming service on July 22, 2022. You can check out the official trailer above.
