For the uninitiated, The Green Knight isn’t just another Merlin-esque adventure. Discovered almost 200 years ago as an authorless manuscript, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight tells the story of King Arthur’s nephew, who faces off against a magical challenger of men. Since the moment it was unearthed, the tale has captivated audiences, but for the first time, it’s getting a faithful recreation.

Teaming up with visual effects whizzes Weta Digital (The Lord of the Rings and District 9), director David Lowery has crafted a film that walks the line between breathtaking and macabre. The first images and trailer for The Green Knight echo the adventure flicks of old, but with a decidedly more modern interpretation.

Patel’s Sir Gawain grapples with self-doubt on the inside, while his demeanour remains headstrong and charismatic. The illusion is shattered, however, when he confronts the eponymous Green Knight, a gigantic emerald-skinned stranger and tester of men. From ghosts and giants to thieves and schemers, the entire ordeal is a homage to the whole fantasy genre.

The Green Knight stars Dev Patel, Alicia Vikander, Joel Edgerton, Sarita Choudhury, Sean Harris, Kate Dickie and Barry Keoghan. According to Amazon Prime Video, the epic fantasy adventure based on the timeless Arthurian legend will premiere exclusively on 28 October in Australia and New Zealand.
