While it might feel like every movie from the last two decades has been a comic book reboot, one of the most powerful performances of the lot has undeniably been Heath Ledger’s portrayal of Gotham villain The Joker, a portrayal which posthumously earned him an Oscar for best supporting actor upon its release ten years ago.
Though we’ve seen a pretty B-grade attempt at playing the enigmatic, heavily made-up bad guy from Jared Leto in Suicide Squad, we are now treated to our first glimpse of Joaquin Phoenix trying his hand at the complex role in DC’s upcoming film JOKER.
Though the character is one of the most famous baddies from the Batman franchise, he is also one of the most well developed in terms of story arc, with a dark past and a tragic set of circumstances which ultimately lead to his downward spiral. The role has previously also been filled by Jack Nicholson and Mark Hamill.
Though this teaser trailer doesn’t offer much in terms of plotline, the first few flashes of Phoenix’s performance look utterly haunting, with a creepy string interlude in the background to add to the suspense.
“I used to think that my life was a tragedy, but now I realise … It’s a comedy”, says the talented Walk The Line actor, as the trailer builds to a crescendo and we are left with little more than a strong desire to see the whole thing the second it comes out.
