Fans of smart, violent, foul-mouthed secret agent spoofs will have been waiting with bated breath for news of the third instalment in Matthew Vaughn’s Kingsman franchise, the film series that made Taron Egerton a star and brought us the divine sight of Colin Firth utterly laying the smack down.
Well there’ll be no Egerton or Firth in Kingsman 3, which has been confirmed as a prequel, without Egerton’s Eggsy or Firth’s Harry fighting the baddies.
However, Vaughn is offering ample compensation, with the announcement that the cast of the prequel will include Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, Gemma Arterton, Djimon Hounsou, Matthew Goode, Rhys Ifans, Tom Hollander, Charles Dance, Daniel Bruhl, and – intriguingly – Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Taylor-Johnson made his name in Vaughn’s Kick-Ass movies, playing a hapless teen-turned-superhero.
Could there be a similar role in store for him here, in a story that is reportedly to be set sometime in the 1900s and portray the origins of the Kingsman? Possibly: what is for sure is that erstwhile Kick-Ass will indubitably be required to kick some ass.
All other details will have to wait, as there’s a cone of silence around the production as is common with big projects. All we know is that it is set to be released in November 2019, but at least, with the combined wattage of the above actors, we can be fairly confident that Kingsman is in good hands.
