Top 100 Grossing Films of 2018

Naturally, the news that Box Office Mojo had revealed 2018’s 100 top-grossing films sparked a certain amount of shock. I mean…have there really been a hundred movies this year? I am wayyyy behind on watching them all.

In other ways, the list isn’t all that surprising. At number one is Avengers: Infinity War, and if it hadn’t been at number one an awful lot of people would be getting fired right now. At number two is Black Panther, a major blow for diversity in Hollywood and testament to the fact that a good script and great action will win audiences over no matter how weird your CGI rhinos look.

The trend of moviegoing in 2018 is pretty starkly illustrated by the top ten. Three are Marvel Cinematic Universe films. Two more are movies about Marvel superheroes outside the MCU. There’s one more superhero flick – a Pixar one, no less, which is a perfect one-two – and then one about dinosaurs, one about video games, and one about Tom Cruise running and jumping off things. Nothing could be more predictable. The only movie in the top ten even remotely connected to reality is Bohemian Rhapsody, which in its own way is also a superhero movie, as anyone who’s seen Freddie Mercury on stage will attest.

The top ten also features six sequels, which will confirm a lot of people’s most grumbly grumbles about modern cinema. But outside the top ten, there are a few heartwarming gems, like Chinese action flicks Operation Red Sea and Detective Chinatown 2 coming in at nos. 11 and 13 to remind us all that there is a world outside the Anglosphere. Also, Show Dogs came in at 91, which we can all agree is justice.

But in the main, the top 100 grossing movies of 2018 just reinforces that if you’re hoping for an end to the world’s obsession with comic books, superheroes and massive CGI tentpole pics, you’ll be waiting a while longer.
