It’s a whole new fiiiiilllllmmmmmm.
Well, sort of. Following the lead of every major Hollywood studio today, Disney is rehashing its previous blockbusters one at a time, and this time, we get Aladdin. Fans of the franchise will be thrilled to see the return of the plucky Arab youngster, his princess bride Jasmine, and his genie sidekick, though the latter, played in this version by Will Smith, looks slightly terrifying compared with Robin Williams’ cartoon incarnation.
Mena Massoud, Nasim Pedrad and Naomi Scott head up the all-singing, all-dancing ensemble, and from what we can see from the trailer, no expense has been spared to create the Disney world that has captured the hearts and minds of audiences for decades; a melange of elaborate set design and CGI combined to take you on a magic carpet ride of your own, for 90 minutes at least.
And, of course, it wouldn’t be a Disney film if it weren’t for a rambunctious animal sidekick and a shitload of fireworks.
Directed by Guy Ritchie, in a departure from his usual gritty format, this may prove to be the winningest family-friendly flick of the year.
Aladdin is pipped to hit cinemas on the 24th of May.
