Movies just about always leave us with a resolution, but that resolution doesn’t always mean that we know what happens to the characters that we have invested so much into after the credits roll. Master of suspense Stephen King has delighted and frightened audiences for decades with stories that haunt us long after we’ve seen them. One such tale was The Shining. That movie is one that left us with questions of what happened to young Danny Torrance after the events that happened at the Overlook Hotel. In Doctor Sleep, we discover that all is not well for the traumatized boy. The Doctor Sleep trailer gives us a peak into what Torrance’s life is, and what awaits the boy with the shining.
Stephen King wrote Doctor Sleep in 2013 as a sequel to The Shining. The book reached the top seller position on the New York Times Best Seller list. Set 40 years after the events of The Shining, Doctor Sleep depicts Ewan McGregor as Dan Torrance, who is still dealing with his psychic powers—mostly by self-medicating with alcohol. Dan meets a young girl, Abra (played by Kyliegh Curran), who is also “magical.” But Dan knows the truth, that having the shining makes you a target for the True Knot cult that feeds off of those that use the power. The cult is lead by Rose the Hat, who is played by Rebecca Ferguson.
Soon after the book was published, Warner Brothers began developing a film adaptation, but funding for the film wasn’t secured until 2017, following the success of It. Mike Flanagan was contracted to direct and also rewrite the original adaptation, which was done by Akiva Goldsman. Filming happened between September and December 2018.
Audiences will be treated to another dose of “Redrum” come October 30, 2019.
