Hot on the heels of announcing a Australian tour, rumours began to spread that Childish Gambino “stole” his latest socially charged song “This is America”. The allegations surfaced on Reddit when fans compared Gambino’s song to a March 2016 song called “American Pharaoh” by New York Rapper Jase Harley.
Fam Rothstein, a creative partner and a member of Childish Gambino’s management team, took to Twitter to respond to the allegations.
The post was swiftly deleted by Fam Rothstein. The rest of the Donald Glover/Childish Gambino camp is yet to comment on the speculation.
When looking at production and subject matter the two songs are undeniably similar, but arguments could be made around creative inspiration or appropriating rather than straight “copying” or “stealing”. Have a listen to the two videos below and tell us what you think in the comments.
