Rihanna Confirmed for 2023 Super Bowl Halftime Show and the Memes are LIT

Rihanna has announced she will be performing at next year’s Super Bowl LVII. The superstar singer will entertain football fans at State Farm Stadium in Glendale – home of the Arizona Cardinals – on February 12, 2023. As one of the most beloved artists of the 21st century, the news has sent social media into an absolute frenzy.

The NFL first announced the news on Sunday afternoon by posting an image of the Barbadian’s distinctly-tattooed hand holding a football with the caption, “Let’s GO”. The sports league also changed its Twitter and Instagram bios in honour of Rihanna, reading, “National Fenty League”.

Posting on her personal account, Rihanna’s halftime announcement garnered 1 million likes on Twitter in under 4 hours, which according to our sources (the internet), is an all-time record for the platform. Super Bowl LVII will mark the first time Rihanna has performed live in over 5 years, with the 34-year-old evolving to become one of the biggest names in fashion and beauty.

As you’d expect, fans have delivered a plethora of memes on social media, mostly making fun of Rihanna’s absence from the music world in favour of her highly successful cosmetics brand, Fenty Beauty. Take a look at some of the best posts below:

Last year’s Super Bowl halftime show featured  Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Mary J. Blige, Kendrick Lamar, 50 Cent and Anderson Paak in a rap-heavy performance for the ages at Inglewood, California’s SoFi Stadium. Playing a montage of bangers from every aforementioned artist, only an artist like Rihanna could match that catalogue of hits.

“We are thrilled to welcome Rihanna to the Apple Music Super Bowl Halftime Show stage,” NFL head of music Seth Dudowsky said in a statement. “Rihanna is a once in a generation artist who has been a cultural force throughout her career. We look forward to collaborating with Rihanna, Roc Nation and Apple Music to bring fans another historic Halftime Show performance.”

While Rihanna has taken a step back from music over the past few years, the singer confirmed to Vogue earlier this year that she was working on a new reggae album, a long-awaited follow-up to 2016’s ANTI.

The Super Bowl seems like the perfect arena to launch a new record, so expect the album to drop alongside the upcoming performance.
