In its fifth year, The Championships is the Grand Finals of the Australian autumn racing carnival, and the second Saturday is the ultimate day out, with the season’s winners all taking to the turf to fight it out for over $20 million in prize money.
With the créme de la créme of the Australian racing elite coming together for two weekends, this Saturday the 14th, Longines Queen Elizabeth II Stakes Day, sees the final chance to witness some of the greatest champions in the world (both horses and riders) all in the one place.
While tickets are still available, we thought we’d put together a quick guide, to make sure you get the most out of your Championships Day.
Look The Part
Whether you plan to dress smart casual or cocktail, remember that 90 percent of the blokes on the day will be wearing navy blue, so set yourself apart by wearing lighter colours and tones (it’s one of the last opportunities before winter to dress a little summery). Floral prints and contrasting colours are all welcome, and remember, if you plan on enjoying the races from the members’ stand, you’ll need to wear a necktie.
It’s a good idea to plan your day out at the start, and set up base somewhere up top, near the post, where you’ll always have a great view (even after the joint is packed). Park yourself somewhere close enough to the bar, so you don’t need to trek, and be aware that you’ll probably have to queue more than once throughout.
It’s also not the worst day for you and the lads to have Find My Friends set up on your mobiles, before you all run amok.
Enjoy The Venue
Royal Randwick is one of Australia’s oldest and best-appointed racecourses, with plenty to do, so whether you’re smashing a Vili’s pie on ground level, doing three courses in Grandview Restaurant, or sipping bubbles in The Stables, make the most of the plethora of facilities at your fingertips.
Back a Winner
Psst. Race seven, horse nine. Trust us* 😉
