Albert Goodwill Spalding produced the first basketball way back in 1894. To commemorate the 125th anniversary of the original “Spalding Basket Ball,” Spalding is reproducing 125 examples of that legendary ball.
The Spalding 125th Anniversary Horween Leather Basketball recreates the ball commissioned by the creator of basketball, Dr. James Naismith. Just like the original, this replica was made in four sections with capless ends and laces. Aside from the prominent leather stitching reminiscent of a football and now obsolete, the replica ball also features the “No. M” stamp, which was the official imprint designating the ball as a “Match Play” ball.
The ball also features the original A.G. Spalding & Bros trademark. Made from high-quality Horween leather, each ball will measure 19.5 inches. The ball comes in a special blue storage case.
Unfortunately, if you weren’t one of the lucky few to sign up for Spalding’s free MVP program online, you probably missed the announcement of the ball during the first game of the NBA Finals. The ball was priced at USD$250 and is currently sold out.
