Ridiculous Hole-in-One Scores Golfer 204 Bottles of Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Some days you’re just on. For Aussie golfer Wade Ormsby, that happened to be today. At the Scottish Open, the Australian golfer had arguably the greatest moment of his lengthy career, knocking down a hole-in-one on the 12th. Oh, and for nailing the shot, he earned himself a whopping 204 bottles of Glengoyne Highland Single Malt Scotch whisky. Not a bad haul for a cheeky little 5-iron box.

The Scottish Open was held at the iconic Renaissance Club in North Berwick, which houses designer Brian Silva’s first-ever 18-hole Signature Course. Famous for its classic design features, straight from golf’s Golden Age of Architecture, The Renaissance Club offers a series of ever-increasingly challenges, but the 12th was no match for Ormsby. The South Australian stepped up to the tee and delivered a punishing shot with a 5-iron straight onto the green. Three bounces later and Ormsby had secured himself a whisky haul worthy of a collector.

The prize for hitting a hole-in-one on the iconic Scottish course was 204 bottles of 10-year-old Glengoyne Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky. A gold-medal winner at both the International Spirits Challenge 2020 and The Scotch Whisky Masters 2020 events, the 10-year-old dram is a true Highland favourite.

With notes of fresh green apple, toffee and a hint of nuttiness on the nose, Glengoyne describes this drop as the true taste of ‘distilling slower than anyone else in Scotland’. Famous for air-drying its barley, never using peat and hand-selected sherry casks crafted from European and American oak, Glengoyne Highland isn’t a bad Scotch to pick up, which is lucky if you just so happened to score 204 bottles of it.

But while Ormsby’s successes on the 12th were heroic, it was another Aussie that took home major accolades. Australia’s Min Woo Lee became a two-time European Tour winner after taking a three-way playoff to claim the Scottish Open. In a sudden-death playoff with Matt Fitzpatrick and Thomas Detry, Lee holed in from nine feet for the winning birdie.
