Time Magazine’s Time 100 list has been around for 15 years, and in that time there’s been an interesting shift in who makes it onto that list. When the list first started, it was made up of heads of state, CEOs of public companies, actors, and global foundation leaders. But recently, that has started to change, with people like climate activist Greta Thunberg and the students of Parkland, Florida, being admitted to the club. These changes have led to the creation of a new list—the Time 100 Next.
“Over the last three years, the quiet rumblings of generational change have become a deafening roar,” wrote Charlotte Alter in her book, The Ones We’ve Been Waiting For: How a New Generation of leaders Will Transform America. That shift is the focus of Time’s new list. The Time 100 Next is “a new list—part of an ongoing expansion of our flagship Time 100 franchise—that spotlights 100 risings stars who are shaping the future of business, entertainment, sports, politics, science, health and more,” reports Time’s website. The people who make the list are from all walks of life and areas of interest, and they represent the spectrum of ages from the 14-year-old figure-skating star Alysa Liu, to Ayman Odeh, who is emerging as a potential kingmaker in Israeli politics at the age of 44. Each of the spotlights on the list were written by other influencers, which include some Time 100 alumni.
Ambition is definitely a driving force behind the entrants on the Time Next 100 list, but “they are driven by hope. They are eager to defy the odds—and fight for a better future,” says Time executive editor Dan Macsai. The list is already out. Take a look and see whom you should be watching in the future.
