The Modern Fuel mechanical pencil claims to be a mechanical pencil that will last a lifetime. This second iteration of Modern Fuel’s design offers some updates to the original, all of which were inspired by feedback from users.
The pencil is 100 percent metal—titanium, copper, stainless steel, and bronze. These materials are more suited to high-end watches than pencils. Interestingly, the pencils are machined from one single piece of metal, which makes it more solid. The increased strength and durability increases the pencil’s longevity. The internal mechanism is also completely metal, so it won’t be breaking any time soon, making this pencil truly an heirloom piece. Speaking of breaking, the addition of a retractable tip will help prevent damage should the pencil ever be dropped.
The pencil is held together by a hidden screw system that takes and Allen key to disassemble. What’s nice about this system is that you can change the lead size to match your need. The pencil is capable of using 0.5 mm, 0.7 mm, and 0.9 mm.
The eraser is also interchangeable. You can use the eraser, or swap it for a stylus for your electronic devices. Or, if you prefer that continuous look, an optional metal eraser plug is also available.
The pencils aren’t cheap, but keep in mind that you’re paying for a high-end piece that will be around for your grandkids to use. In that regard, it just might be a pencil for multiple lifetimes.
