As if fronting one of the most famous hip hop acts of all-time, funding the development of AI technology, owning his own, separate ranges of headphones and sunglasses, and working as a producer and running a charity wasn’t enough, LA-based mega star will.i.am has curated a collaboration with Specsavers. We interviewed will.i.am last week ahead of the official release of the new frames, and now, they’re available to the public.
The range, which consists of fourteen eyeglasses frames, and three pairs of sunglasses, is his first foray into the depths of eyeglasses design, and his collection draws inspiration from the rare vintage shapes worn by iconic ’80s hip-hop artists like Run DMC and Flavor Flav, giving classic styles a modern facelift.
will.i.am has said, “What makes my collection and designs unique are the subtleties and attention to detail that gives them the extra ‘oomph’, while remaining entirely wearable.”
While vintage flair peeks through each design, its will.i.ams passions as a futurist which sets the collection apart from other, more classic designs. While staying fundamentally faithful to the tenets of eyeglasses design, his penchant for sharper angles and mixed textures has produced an interesting, unisex range of frames that cater to no particular demographic.
A couple of splashes of colour will keep fans of his more outlandish outfits satisfied, but it’s the subtle restraint he’s applied to some of the more conservative styles in the series which prove that he’s more than just a rapper who put his name to a label, he’s a dedicated dabhand at design, too.
