Off-White Founder and Louis Vuitton Artistic Director Virgil Abloh has debuted his new streetwear collaboration Nike x Off-White “Football, Mon Amour.”
Arriving in Australia on 15 June, the capsule features clothing, footwear and accessories inspired by the 2018 Russia World Cup and Abloh’s passion for football.
For Abloh, designing football apparel is an opportunity to revisit his youth, playing hip-hop tracks on the way to high school soccer matches. The big and bold visual cues of sport were also vital to mixing lifestyle and sports branding.
“The great thing about the vocabulary and history of football is that aesthetically it has its own look,” says Abloh. “I was always inspired by the way European teams have a sponsor printed over the chest. When I was working on this collection, I wanted to celebrate the different variants of typography.”
The jersey’s black-and-white checkerboard is a nod to Czech strips. The logo, a lion juggling dots is Abloh paying homage to popular football crests and explaining at the most basic level, the optimal place on the foot to strike a ball. The checkerboard is also similar to the Louis Vuitton x FIFA capsule although Abloh does not design that one. Additionally, all the numbers refer to those Abloh wore during his playing years.
Nike x Off-White “Football, Mon Amour” includes a Nike Flyknit Zoom Fly sneaker with the same dots as the jersey with a design that mimics football boots so you are subconsciously training all the time.
